Easy Ways to Relieve Pain Without Medication.
Mind-body techniques won’t replace medical care, but they can genuinely help you manage chronic pain day to day.
Medication is effective at reducing pain, but it can come with unpleasant, or even serious, side effects when used over the long term. If you’re living with back pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, or other chronic pain, mind-body techniques like meditation and yoga may offer a way to ease your symptoms without relying solely on medication. Because pain involves both the body and the mind, these approaches may help by changing the way you perceive pain signals. If pain has been ongoing, your brain may keep registering pain signals even after the original cause has settled, and learning to relax through focus and deep breathing can help you release muscle tension and shift your attention away from the pain.
Techniques Worth Trying
Deep breathing is central to nearly every mind-body technique, so it’s worth learning first. Using a word or phrase to guide your focus can help, and there are apps that use sound or imagery to support a steady breathing rhythm. Deep breathing counters the stress response, which raises your heart rate and puts your body on alert, with a relaxation response instead. Close your eyes, relax your muscles, and focus on each breath. If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back.
Mindfulness means picking an activity you enjoy, whether that’s reading, gardening, walking in nature, or cooking, and becoming fully present in it. With practice, you can bring that same mindfulness into more parts of your daily life.
Yoga combines breath control, meditation, and movement to stretch and strengthen the body, and apps or videos can help you get started. Some health insurance plans will even subsidize a yoga or tai chi class at a local gym.
Positive imagination involves shifting your focus away from what you can’t do and toward what you still can, giving you a more accurate and encouraging view of yourself. Picture yourself, in your mind’s eye, at a time when you were pain-free or experiencing much less pain.
Building the Habit
These techniques are often easiest to learn with the guidance of a professional, and it typically takes consistent practice, around 30 minutes, three times a week, before they start to meaningfully help. With time, the relaxation and pain relief you experience will get stronger and last longer, until eventually just a few deep breaths can bring real relief. Once you’re comfortable with the techniques, you can use them during everyday activities, whether you’re working, talking, or just going about your day, building a greater sense of control over your pain and how it affects your life.
