Sound Familiar?

Does this sound like you?

  • Squinting at your phone because the light makes the throb worse
  • A tight band feeling, like a hat two sizes too small, by mid-afternoon
  • Reaching for the same tender spot at the base of your skull every day
  • Canceling plans because a headache showed up right on schedule again
  • Popping ibuprofen before noon just to get through a workday
  • Turning off the car radio because sound feels like it’s hitting a bruise

Why It Happens

A headache is a symptom. Something causes it.

Most recurring headaches aren’t random. Tension-type and cervicogenic headaches usually trace back to your neck: tight, overworked muscles at the base of your skull and across your shoulders, stiff joints in the upper neck that refer pain up into your head, and the forward-head posture that comes from hours of screens and phones. Weak deep neck muscles let your head sit forward and heavy, and stress tends to pile on top, tightening the same muscles even more.

None of that shows up on a glance, and it’s rarely just “stress.” It takes a real, cause-first evaluation to sort out whether your neck joints, your posture, or your muscles are the actual driver. That’s why another bottle of pain relievers so often falls short: it treats the symptom, not the source. Find the real cause, and the headaches start spacing out.

The Honest Truth

Waiting on a headache doesn’t make it wait on you.

If you keep waiting

  • Your “once in a while” headache turns into a weekly guest
  • You lean on more medication just to get the same relief
  • The tight, guarded muscles in your neck and shoulders get tighter, feeding the next one before the last one clears

If you start this week

  • You find out whether your neck, not just your head, is the real source
  • Hands-on release calms the tight muscles driving the throb, starting visit one
  • You get a plan with an endpoint: real relief, not another refill

Nobody regrets starting too early. Every week, someone in our clinic says they regret waiting.

How We Fix It

The same four phases. Built for your head.

Every plan has an endpoint. Here’s what the four phases look like for chronic headaches.

Weeks 1–2

Pain

Calm the throb down.

Hands-on techniques release the tight muscles at the base of your skull and ease head pain, starting your very first visit.

Weeks 2–6

Prime

Get your neck moving again.

Targeted mobility work restores motion in the stiff neck joints that keep referring pain up into your head.

Weeks 6–10

Perform

Build a neck that can carry your day.

Progressive strengthening for your deep neck and postural muscles builds the support your head has been missing.

Weeks 10+

Prevent

Fewer headaches, further apart.

Posture and movement habits get tested under real workday demands before you’re cleared to go all-in: that’s the endpoint, not just another appointment.

My time at Excel has been a great experience. Everyone worked well together and made it a friendly place. The doctors and therapists were effective, knowledgeable, and compassionate. Although I’m grateful for every person who treated me with professional kindness and consideration, I especially want to thank Yves for always remembering my name and being such a blessing.

Questions, Answered

What people ask before booking for headaches.

Usually not, and for most tension and neck-related headaches it isn’t the first step. The large majority of headaches are driven by tight muscles, stiff neck joints, and posture, not by a bigger, more urgent problem. We start with a hands-on evaluation to find what’s actually feeding your headaches, and if anything raises a real red flag, we’ll help you get to the right specialist fast. You don’t have to wait on a referral to start feeling better.

Yes, in most cases gentle movement helps more than lying still in a dark room every time. Guarding your neck and avoiding movement altogether tends to make it stiffer, which feeds the next headache. The key is dosing the right movement for your specific neck, which is exactly what a physical therapist sorts out at your evaluation, then progresses safely as you improve.

Most patients feel meaningful change within 4–6 visits. A full plan for headaches runs through all four phases, Pain, Prime, Perform, and Prevent, typically over 8–10 weeks, depending on how long you’ve been dealing with it. Either way, you get a plan with an endpoint: you’ll always know which phase you’re in and what’s left, not an open-ended string of appointments.
